Day Camp Planning Guide for Congregations

    Day Camp Setting

The very first thing a congregation needs to do when planning for a Day Camp is the selection of a setting to hold the Day Camp. The location needs to provide a safe, outdoor environment for campers. with room to play games. American Camping Association Standards, which we will be following, require that there be a shelter available so campers can get out of bright sun and\or rain. The ACA Standards also require the availability of bathrooms, running water and access to a telephone.

    Day Camp Coordinator and Committee

Each congregation or group of congregations will need to identify a Day Camp Coordinator and Committee to work with the Day Camp Director in planning your Day Camp. The responsibilities of the Day Camp Coordinator and Committee are recruitment of campers and volunteers, housing and food for staff, completion of an emergency plan, snacks and drinks for campers, presence at day camp, and a final evaluation. A step-by-step planning checklist, an outline for the emergency plan, registration and publicity materials will be given to Coordinator/Committee during the spring.

    Campers

Day Camp is usually for young people entering grades 1-5. Churches are responsible for recruitment of campers. ACA Standards require a ratio of 1:8 of leaders to campers therefore, Camp Hanover will provide 1 counselor for every eight campers up to 32 campers. Enrollment needs to be at least 10 campers.
